Hiring

Should You Hire a YouTube Agency?

30 August 2026

This page exists because the question is hard to research. Most pages answering it are written by one provider explaining why their own model is the right one. This one names the four models, including the ones that compete with what I do.

The four kinds of provider

Done-for-you production. They make the videos. Ideation, scripting, filming support, editing, thumbnails, uploading. You appear on camera and they handle the rest. Typically the most expensive option and the one that removes the most work.

Editing and post-production. You film, they cut. Cheaper, and the right answer if your bottleneck is time in the edit rather than knowing what to make.

One-off audits and consultancy. A written report or a call, priced as a single purchase. Useful for a decision, less useful for a habit. UK prices for a written channel audit generally run from a few hundred pounds upward.

Ongoing analysis and strategy. Somebody measures what the channel is doing, decides what it means, and tells your team what to make next. No filming, no editing. This is the model our YouTube channel management service uses.

Which one you need depends on your bottleneck

If you've nobody to film and edit, no amount of strategy will produce a video. Hire production.

If you're already publishing regularly and can't tell which videos are earning anything, more production makes the problem larger rather than smaller. That's the case for the analysis model.

If you need one decision made and then want to be left alone, buy an audit and stop there. A retainer for a question you only have once is a waste of your money.

What it costs, roughly

Done-for-you production in the UK is usually a four-figure monthly retainer, and often more once filming is included. One-off written audits commonly sit in the hundreds. Ongoing analysis sits between the two, and is usually a monthly fee with a setup charge attached to it.

Very few providers publish prices. When one doesn't, it usually means the number varies by client, which is fair, but it also means you can't compare without booking a call. That's a cost in itself.

Questions worth asking before you sign

What will you send me each month, and can I see an example of it made for someone else?

How will we know in ninety days whether this worked, and what number are we agreeing to look at?

What do you need from me, and how many hours a month is that?

If it isn't working, what happens?

Who does the work, and is it the person I'm speaking to now?

The honest summary

Most businesses hiring for YouTube buy production because it's the visible gap. Filming is the part that feels hard. But a channel that publishes consistently and still produces no enquiries doesn't have a production problem, and buying more of it won't find the fault.

Work out which of the four models fits the bottleneck you actually have, then ask the five questions above. Any provider worth hiring will answer all five without hedging.
